 Remember ever having those naughty daydreams that played in your mind after developing a crush on the kind, attractive teacher or the taboo thoughts of alternative ways you’d want that hot older neighbor to reward you for mowing their lawn? Maybe these thoughts budded in front of a TV screen, watching your first Hollywood crush say some infamous line that made you think, “one day, I’ll make them mine. The age gap wouldn’t even matter!”

Yes my friend, we’re talking age gap romances and what’s the huge fuss about them. So pull out your heating pads and lather up that icy-hot to get you in the mood!

We are all familiar with an age gap in some way or form—movies like Roman Holiday, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Twilight, and television shows like Modern Family, Age of Attraction, Rivals and more. Age gap romances are nothing new, but its existence produces many factors that attract the eye or disgust the masses. When looking at the nature of this trope in stories, it’s safe to say the thing that makes the trope alluring to both the readers and fellow characters probably lies in the promise of capability. Maturity, experience, and vitality serve as driving forces that activate that magnetic charm. Then married with darker elements, age gap explores the nature of taboo attractions while exploring the consuming nature of forbidden desires. 

The unpredictability of how the relationship simply exacerbates the need to explore it. After all, Pandora’s Box wouldn’t be a parable if people didn’t enjoy a good gambling game with fate.

It's a thoroughly discussed in the dark romance sphere that the draw to the genre comes from how we’re afforded an intimate examination of human nature—the embracing of the darkness illuminates the worth in what society deems pariah-status, and places our broken pieces into a kaleidoscope of hope. Age gap romance adds to the darkly, delicious breakdown of life that words can’t always express. Delicious tension builds from the recipe of secrets, forbidden attractions, and unbridled lust to then feed into the raw core of how dark romance exposes needs for desire and intimacy. 

Now for sure, age is sometimes the sole factor for some people who enjoy this trope. Older partners are kinda hot, and drive the people coco-for-coco puffs! Though for others, the maturity of the older love interest sparks an interest that no other can rival; but I promise the attraction spurs more than the want to piss off mom and dad. The trope serves to become an axis point of tension that embroils the main characters in throes of insatiable passion. Elements of forbidden pleasure that come from older employers that the love interest can’t resist magnifies the emotions inherently woven into the already complex journey. 

Within darker themes, we see the multitudes of devotion and dedication the main lead experiences towards their love interest to ensure that they are endgame, but when you add the age gap trope? We see authors explore a mature, procured tension that spurs from a soul that’s been without light for eons. Scenes where we see the older love interest tantalize the layers of hunger and intrigue within the younger main character while also silently starving for a taste of the forbidden fruit that is the main character is utterly delicious. It’s a literary tool to illustrate yearning, a need that transcends the confines of societal acceptance or normalities. It’s like a thirsty man finding water in the desert—that carnal hunger will drive even the most grounded person to indulge in some scandalous schemes. 

Age is more than a number, but a mark of one’s experiences in this vast thing we call life. A stark contrast to the path of idealistic day dreams, the promising older love interest ensures security is possible while you can also explore the layers of spontaneity that comes with youth. Readers can balance the older love interests' sageness while recognizing a younger partner’s idealism and youth in a romantic relationship, like a unique seed raring to bud. 

For many, age gap subverts the shame of aging and highlights the beauty of its process. Hands with skin that carry age and tales untold, affirm that life enriches the self with time and survivorhood. It's the same qualities that provide opportunities for the main character stability and the nurturing to develop in themselves. Whether it be in the grip of an aged CEO with a willing to take care of your needs, a mature woman with power at her fingertips and a shoddy past that allures your very being, or a mysterious mafioso that took a thousand lives yet uses his weapons of mass destruction to protect our dear main character, that age marks a seasoned lover that makes the crowd go wild. Those scorned grays scattered along love interest scalps or found blended within the male love interest beard equates to the maturity gained from life’s humbling passageway. Every joint pop or guttural sigh is a reminder that life doesn’t end at some early stage but continues on; we learn that we always have time for change, evolution, and the chance to receive some joy in the world as the younger partner breathes life into the love interest's life. 

Now, I hate to be the contrarian while we’re all vibing, but even with all the steamy and heartfelt fun that the trope brings, age gap romances also bring up an important essential to address the ethical implications of the genre.

You know those moments where the main character denies the rich partner’s black card off principle? As much as I rolled my eyes at the acceptance of poverty, this sparked a thought about how authors unconsciously address moral implications even in the la-la land of fictional writing.

In a society where exploitation is a common occurrence, worries about power imbalances in age gap romances are quite valid. Here is where we hit that hard limit where reality and fiction dangerously converge. 

No matter the level of mental suspension, unconsciously we recognize how factors of the character's dynamics could pose a problematic response. Following the example, in fictional settings accepting money without “working for it” seems perfect, but real world situations where this occurs is a gamble between a mutual dealing between adults versus a budding situation where financial abuse or exploitation could result. Age gap romances present a slippery slope where power abuses can occur despite that never being the intention of the author, characters, or story plot. 

In fiction, these power dynamics propose a delicious point of tension and forbidden lust, however in real life…some of these situations would result in a reunion episode with Chris Hansen. Even as a fan of the trope, it’s not impossible to understand how the power imbalance can result in exploitative and abuse tendencies when the younger parties involved are not yet capable of navigating situations where the other party could psychologically or financially manipulate them. Sure, not every older love interest seeks their partners with the intent of grooming or exploitation, but there’s a responsibility in recognizing how these situations can arise, even in fiction.  

Now, where do we go from here? Good question. Great question in fact because I’m still trying to figure it out. 

There’s a need to always understand boundaries even within the realm of fiction—this is a reality that we face, particularly as dark romance readers. The actions of main characters serve as personifications of their internal struggles, desires, and needs so rather than glorifying their crimes or dark hues, we are idolizing their intentions. When it comes to age gap romances, we recognize the power imbalances, yet within the fictional frameworks we’re able to imagine situations in which such imbalances are factors of tension rather than safety risks. We as readers, authors—everyone really—must understand and champion concepts of consent, mental maturity, emotional boundaries, and safety when exploring such dynamics. Whether they be fictional or real, the prospect of establishing a relationship with anyone must first be built under the guise of mutual understanding, care, and respect. 

Age gap romance is a trope that spurs complex storytelling through subverting authority and control while also making you question your limits. However there’s features of the trope that still call for examining how age gap still operates in unsafe grey areas. The biggest thing to remember folks is that we can have fun like the filthy animals we enjoy to be, but make sure you’re enjoying your fun responsibly—even in the realm of fictional land.
